Early Life

Monica Cameron was raised in Norwich, Kansas, as the oldest of six children. She decided during high school that she wanted to be a prosecuting attorney. Her goal was to protect the public by putting serious criminals in jail. As a teenager and young adult, Monica worked with children as a nanny and childcare provider.

Education

In 2005, Monica graduated Magna Cum Laude from Washburn University with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Legal Studies.

Monica’s earned a full-tuition scholarship to Washburn University School of Law. While in law school, Monica was elected Student Bar Association Secretary, Kansas Bar Association Representative, and International Law Society Faculty Liaison. She was also a member of the Family Law Society. Based on her superior legal writing and research skills, she was selected to mentor other law students as the Legal Analysis, Research and Writing Teacher’s Assistant.

Professional Experience

From 2002 through 2006, Monica worked as a legal assistant at the family law firm of Martha Ortiz, in Topeka, Kansas.

Monica learned about the dynamics of domestic violence through her employment at a battered women’s shelter. She later prosecuted domestic violence cases an intern at the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.

Monica interned for the Kansas Association for Justice, where she attended meetings of the Kansas House Judiciary Committee and analyzed proposed statutory amendments. She also completed a civil law internship at the Washburn Law Clinic.

From 2008 until 2010, Monica was a Sedgwick County Assistant District Attorney, handling adult and juvenile misdemeanor and felony cases.

In 2010, Monica opened her own practice, Cameron Law Office, P.A. While managing her own law practice, Monica became a well-respected Limited Case Manager. Monica has experience mediating agreements in family law cases and testifying at trial in contested cases. From 2016 until September 2020, Monica was the Managing Partner of Cameron & Herrman, P.A. , a law firm focusing primarily on family law practice.

Interests

Monica has been married for fourteen years and has two children. When she is not in the courtroom, she enjoys gardening, swimming, cheering for her children at sports events, and camping with her family.

Monica has previously served on the Board of Trustees and the Executive Leadership Board for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). From 2017-2019, she organized fundraisers for LLS, including Cocktails for a Cure and Touch a Truck, Save a Life.
